2021 Review
Children are running through a field to visit the newly purchased land and future site of their new school.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, school was open for only a few weeks at a time. Nursery school did not open at all. KEC-AVOH continued our monthly meetings and quarterly joint board meetings. We started working on a new website, maintained our Facebook presence and continued to fundraise on Facebook. We began work on an informational video and released one focused on the importance of philanthropy. In an advisory role, we helped KEC-UG by assisting with many administrative issues like how to start a library, how to mark library books, account for textbooks, and how to account for children’s attendance. We also worked with KEC-UG to establish a Google Drive and helped organize their records. Our team established metrics to measure our success and designed certificates of appreciation for use by KEC-UG and KEC-AVOH. Focusing on partnerships, we began speaking with other organizations to get ideas on how to improve the living conditions in Kaguma. These organizations include Prosper Mama Africa regarding project management of community transformation through agriculture and other small projects, and Run4Water, dedicated to building water wells in poor, rural communities. Run4Water will be traveling to Kaguma in March 2022 to evaluate the water situation and determine the feasibility of building a well for the KEC community. In addition, Run4Water will be supporting a program called 84 Days for girls ages 12-18, an effort targeted to keep girls in school throughout the school year.
KEC-AVOH continued monthly funding for the school to keep our teachers. We funded the successful purchase of 7.39 acres of land for the construction of a new KEC school complex, and We also funded the purchase of seeds so that the community could grow potatoes and maize and test the fertility of the land.
KEC-AVOH funded the installation of a new sign and bulletin board for the school so that school and community events are more easily communicated to everyone in Kaguma.
LMI made a large donation for the purchase of textbooks and library books for KEC, and we now have one set of textbooks for every two students. Another donor funded the purchase of sports equipment. This allowed KEC to fabricate soccer goals and purchase team bibs and balls. KEC-AVOH also funded the purchase of additional school uniforms, firewood, staff travel and Christmas gift bags for needy families. We started a new program at the school that provides academic and citizenship incentive awards.
